Five short conversations
You will hear five short conversations. For questions 1–5, choose the right answer (A, B or C). Each conversation is played twice.
Q1 — Travel to Liverpool · Female: Excuse me, I’d like to go to Liverpool on Friday. Male: Well, you can go by bus or train. Female: Is the train expensive? Male: Yes, the bus is much cheaper. It’s only £20. Female: Right, that’s better for me. Can I have a ticket please? Male: Yes, certainly. (= C bus)
Q2 — Which bill · Male: Is that the electricity bill? Female: No, it’s the water bill. Male: Is it very big? Female: Not as bad as last time. Male: Oh, good. (= B water)
Q3 — Tomorrow afternoon · Male: This is a beautiful beach. Shall we come again tomorrow? Female: Don’t we have to go shopping? Male: We can do that in the morning, and come here in the afternoon. Female: OK. And let’s bring Joe and Linda with us. (= B beach/picnic — they will return to the beach)
Q4 — How the man heard about the fire · Female: How did you hear about the fire? It wasn’t on the television news. Male: No. It wasn’t in the newspaper either. Sandra phoned and told me about it. Female: Oh, I see. (= C telephone)
Q5 — Mr Thompson’s call time · Male: Have there been any calls for me this morning? Female: Yes, Mr Thompson rang about the computer. Male: Oh, what time was that? Female: About nine thirty. Can you ring him at two o’clock this afternoon? Male: Yes, OK. (= A 9:30)
At a party — what each guest wants
Listen to Jim and Julie talking at a party. What do the guests want to eat or drink? For each person (6–10), choose a letter A–H. Example (Kevin): E — orange juice.
Jim: Hello, Julie. Your new flat is really nice.
Julie: Thanks, Jim. It’s nice to see all my friends here.
Jim: Yes, the living room’s certainly full of people. Er … Kevin wants to know if you have any orange juice? Julie: Yes, I have. Everybody’s hungry or thirsty, aren’t they? (example Kevin = E orange juice)
Jim: Of course, it’s a party! Would you like me to help you?
Julie: Yes, please. Barbara wants a sandwich. (Q6 Barbara = F sandwich)
Jim: What does she want in it?
Julie: She asked for cheese, and Paul wants an ice-cream. (Q7 Paul = C ice-cream)
Jim: Fine. I’ll make the sandwich and get the ice-cream for him. What does Diana want?
Julie: She isn’t hungry. She just wants a glass of milk. (Q8 Diana = D milk)
Jim: What about the other guests? Do they want anything?
Julie: I don’t think so. Oh, what about you, Jim? What do you want?
Jim: I’ll just get a bottle of coke from the fridge. Do you want some, Julie? (Q9 Jim = B coke)
Julie: No thanks. After all this work, I need a cup of tea! (Q10 Julie = G tea)
Travel agency — flights to Buenos Aires
Listen to a man asking for information in a travel agency. For questions 11–15, tick A, B or C. Example: How often can you fly to Buenos Aires? → C three times a week.
Male: Hello.
Female: Good morning. Can I help you?
Male: Well, I have to go to Argentina next week, so I’d like some information about flying to Buenos Aires.
Female: OK. Well, there are direct flights … er … on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays.
Male: And what time do they leave?
Female: At 2 p.m. on all those days. (Q11 = B 2 p.m.)
Male: OK … Wednesday is best for me. Now, how can I get to the airport? Is there a bus?
Female: Yes. You’ll have to check in at the airport at twelve o’clock, so you could take the ten o’clock coach from the bus station in Mill Street. (Q12 = C Mill Street)
Male: In Mill Street, OK. How long does the coach take?
Female: About one and a half hours. (Q13 = B 1 hour 30 minutes)
Male: And how much is a single ticket to Buenos Aires?
Female: Well, a single to Buenos Aires is £300, but if you have a student card there’s a twenty per cent reduction. (Q14 = B £300)
Male: Yes, I’ve got a student card. Here it is.
Female: OK, so the flight will be er … £240.
Male: Right. And the coach fare?
Female: That’s £13.50. (Q15 = A £13.50)
Male: OK. I’ll book it, please.
Toni’s had an accident — hospital info
You will hear a girl talking about her brother, Toni. Listen and complete the hospital info form (16–20). You will hear the conversation twice.
Female: Excuse me! You’re a friend of Toni’s, aren’t you?
Male: Yes. Why?
Female: Oh, he’s had an accident. I’m his sister. He wants his schoolfriends to visit him in hospital.
Male: Oh, dear. That’s terrible. Is he OK?
Female: He fell off his bicycle and hurt his leg. But he’s not too bad.
Male: Which hospital is he in?
Female: The City hospital. Near the University. You know where it is, don’t you? (Q16 = (the) City)
Male: Yes … oh, poor Toni.
Female: His room’s G8. (Q17 = G8)
Male: OK. Is the room easy to find?
Female: Yes. It’s on the third floor, near the lift. (Q18 = 3rd/third)
Male: And when can we visit him?
Female: Well, the visiting hours are from four to … erm … seven, every day. (Q19 = 7 o’clock/7 p.m.)
Male: Well, I’ll get after school today. Does he want anything?
Female: I expect something to read would be nice — some magazines perhaps. (Q20 = (some) magazines)
Male: OK. I’ll take him some.
Park Farm — visitor information
You will hear some information about a farm. Listen and complete the form (21–25). You will hear the information twice.
Answerphone: This weekend why not visit Park Farm, in the lovely village of Hayley. Children love it as do parents in the country that the whole family will enjoy! Come and see the farm animals, go for a walk across the fields and take the children to the mini zoo. Afterwards, you can look around the Gift Shop or have a drink in the Black Cat Tea Room. (Q21 = Black)
From the Tea Room, you can watch your children playing outside.
Park Farm is open every day from half past ten in the morning to five o’clock in the evening. (Q22 = 10.30 / half past ten)
An adult ticket costs six pounds and children between three and sixteen pay four pounds. But you can save money with a family ticket which costs seventeen pounds. (Q23 = 17)
Dogs are not allowed on the farm so please leave your dog at home! (Q24 = dogs / your dog)
